Out Tonight/Another Day
December 24th, 1989, The Loft, 11th and Ave B, later that night...

Mimi was still buzzing from the flirting with Roger, and feeling bad for teasing him. His face as she turned around...

It hit her as she dressed for work (the usual -- black leather and lace) the reason he had turned her down.

He didn't know. That she was sick too.

She knew he was, she'd heard his friends mention it, in the hallway. That ex of his, she'd shouted at him about it too.

So noble of him, really. Cute, the way he'd resisted her so much. Made her want him even more.

What's the time?
Well, it's gotta be close to midnight.
My body's talking to me, it says time for danger.

She thought of him, all through work. Counting down the seconds till she was off.

It says "I wanna commit a crime.
Wanna be the cause of a fight.
I wanna put on a tight skirt and flirt
With a stranger."

As she danced for the crowd, the usuals, the blow ins. People who had nothing better to do on Christmas Eve than go to a dingy dance club in Alphabet City.

I've had a knack, from way back
Of breaking the rules once I learned the game
Get up, life's to quick
I know someplace sick
Where this chick'll dance in the flames...

She loved to dance. It was almost like getting a hit, the way she could just lose herself in the music and the movements of her body. She lived for it, the adrenaline and the endorphins and how amazing it made her feel.

We don't need any money.
I always get in for free.
You can get in too, if you get in with me...

Tonight, though, she couldn't wait to be finished, to get out. Out and home and then to Roger. He wanted her, she wanted him. It was that simple, and he would see that. She knew he would.

Lets go
Out tonight
I have to go
Out tonight
You wanna play
Let's run away
We won't be back before it's Christmas Day
Take me out tonight...

She wondered what she'd to tonight. Would she convince Roger to come out with her? She could bring him to the club by the park. Or, they could stay in. She had her stash, and could think of many different ways to keep him entertained.

When I get away from the doorman
Do you know how lucky you'll be?
That you're online with the feline
Of Avenue B.
Let's go...
Out tonight...

She hurried home, and threw open her window, looking out over the city, she wasn't used to being home this early, but it was Christmas Eve. Her family were back home, all apart from her and her brother, who she hadn't seen in a month. She'd been born in this city, and didn't really feel at home in the small village where people she'd never met seemed to know every detail about her.

In the evening, I've got to roam
Can't sleep in the city of neon and chrome
Feels to damn much like home
When the Spanish babies cry
So let's find a bar
So dark we forget who we are
And all the scars of the
Nevers and maybes
Die....

She stepped out onto the fire escape, not noticing or caring about the cold. Her eyes fell on the stairs, and the light on upstairs. She could hear him messing around on his guitar - that same tune he liked to play over and over.

Let's go
Out tonight
Uh huh
I have to go
Out tonight
You're sweet, wanna hit the street?
Wanna wail at the moon like a cat in heat?
Just take me
Out tonight...

She grinned, and bounded up the steps, and to the window. She pushed it open and climbed in.

He was sitting on the table, with his guitar. She leaned against the window.

Please take me
Out tonight
Don't forsake me
Out tonight
I'll let you make me
Out tonight....

"Take me out tonight?" she proposed. He just stared at her, so she sauntered over to the table, and crawled along it, hand pulling her stash from her belt.

"Please?" she added, snaking her arms around his neck and pulling him in for a kiss.

Roger pulled the guitar closer to him, eyes wide. She wasn't holding anything back, crawling toward him on the table...crawling over holding that same bag from before. God she was hot....and completely ready for whatever he could give her. She leaned in and for a moment he let himself kiss her. But...he couldn't. He leaned over the guitar using it almost as a shield.

"Who do you think you are?" he said coldly. "Barging in on me and my guitar?"

He pulled back the table between them now too, she looked so hurt.

"Little girl hey," he added almost venomously, "the door is that way. You better go you know the fires out anyway."

He leaned in again eyes dark.

"Take the powder, take your candle cause your sweet whisper I just can't handle." He pushed away from the table and practically ran towards the door.

"Well take your hair in the moonlight. Your brown eyes. Goodbye. Goodnight," he said with finality he really didn't feel.

She froze. She hadn't expected him to snap like that. He was shouting and -- little girl?! She was angry and stunned as he continued, and he made his way to the door, and then paused.

He needed a hit. And he was hurt, and he didn't know. She'd tell him, tell him he could have her, that she wasn't just teasing, and then it'd be okay.

She reached out to touch his shoulder.

He had to mean it -- he couldn't--

"I should tell you," he muttered, trying to think if there was any way he could make her listen. But there was none.

Her hand touched his shoulder.

"No!" he told her, meaning...he wasn't sure what.

"Another time, another place," he said walking foward, forcing her to backtrack into the room, she had to know. "Our temperature would climb, there'd be a long embrace. We'd do another dance, it'd be another play. Looking for romance? Come back another day," he said moving around her to grab his guitar and move back to the couch.

"Another day," he repeated with finality, waiting for her to leave.

He snapped again, shoulders tensing and rounding on her, and she backed away. He was deliberately rubbing her face in it, making a point of rejecting her outright.

She shook her head, walking around the back of the couch.

"The heart may freeze, or it can burn," she told him. She so wanted to stop him hurting, and kill the bitch who had left him like this. "The pain will ease, if I can learn," she added, leaning over the back of the couch.

"There is no future, there is no past," she said. "I live this moment as my last."

She couldn't stop herself now. She'd made her way around to the front of the sofa, and kneeled on the small table, looking him in the eye and pleading with him.

"There's only us, there's only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss." He was staring at her, guitar in his lap, stony faced. Was it working?

"No other road, no other way," she said. "No day but today."

Nice words he thought coldly, and were it anyone else he bet they'd be ripping her clothes off about now.

Hell a year ago, so would he. But things were different, Besides which, pretty words could only take her so far.

"Excuse me, if I'm off track," he said almost sneeringly. "But if your so wise, tell me, why do you need smack?" He almost laughed at himself for saying it but she was just a kid. She shouldn't become what he was now.

"Take your needle," he added for good measure, what was he gonna do share with her and kill her?

She wasn't leaving. Dammit, why wasn't she leaving? He finally stood up angrily.

"Take your fancy prayer. Don't forget, get the moonlight outta your hair." He pushed her almost out of the door onto the landing. Cruel but that was how he had to be.

"Long ago you mighta lit up my heart," he admitted. "But the fire's dead and never ever gonna start!"

He throws her out, so angry and hurt and she doesn't know what to do. She looks back at him, helplessly.

So many things she should say. She should say sorry. Tell him, just tell him, she has it too. Tell him she wants to help. That she can stop it hurting.

But she can't. She doesn't know how to find the words. She just stands there, uselessly.

"Another Time, another place," he screams at her, "the words would only rhyme, we'd be in outer space. It'd be another song, we'd sing another way. You wanna prove me wrong, come back another day," he said almost as a challenge, but not quite sure why. What he stood to gain from being so dammed heartless

"Another Day!" he yelled down after her.

She runs down the stairs, but pauses halfway there.

"There's only us, only tonight," she says. "We must let go, to know what's right." He looks down, and she sighs and continues, casting glances back.

"No other course, no other way. No day but today," she says, looking back up one more time before she runs out the door, into the street.

She pauses in the street, sees him walk onto the fire escape.

She looked up at him.

"I can't control my destiny," she says, barely above a whisper, voice thick, eyes stinging with tears, but she won't cry. She won't. "I trust my soul, my only goal is just to be."

He looks down.

He shook his head. "Just let me be."

She turns, and runs around the corner, fumbling for her stash as she does.
